1. Look for sites that use secure payment systems: This shows up as the URL for the shopping cart and checkout pages being "https:" rather than "http:" and most browsers also have a little lock or padlock icon that indicates the site is secure too. Now their using encryption doesn't mean you're automatically safe, but it does mean that they're paying attention to your security and that's a very good sign. For the same reason, I don't shop at sites that are poorly designed or downright ugly. I just don't trust 'em.

2. Always pay with a credit card : Often you can use other payment methods, like echecks or a money order, but the advantage of a credit card is that Visa, MasterCard, American Express, etc are consumer, not merchant oriented. If there's a problem, it's quite easy to reverse a charge or let their fraud department deal with it. Paypal offers this level of security with some, though not all, transactions.

3. Get an "online only" credit card : This is something I figured out a few years ago and it's really helped protect my credit. By having only one credit card that I use for all online transactions it not only protects my other card accounts, but also makes it easier to review the statement each month and spot any anomolies or problems.

4. Shop at larger, better known online stores if you have that option : A lot of my friends run smaller online retail stores and I am delighted with their success, but my personal approach is to prefer a well-established site like Amazon.com, Buy.com, llbean.com, or rei.com to purchase things. Big companies have more to lose if they have unhappy customers and I think they're just safer and more trustworthy anyway. If you do go to smaller online retailers, look for guarantees, better business bureau membership, and even Google 'em to see if there are bad reports floating around.

It’s enough to make one avoid shopping online, except that it’s so darn convenient! What’s your opinion? Should I avoidshopping online entirely, or are there tips you can offer on how to stay safe while still going to the virtual mall?

Shopping online does carry some risk, but so does shopping at brick-and-mortar stores. At least online shoppers don't need to worry about fender-benders in the parking lot, pick pockets at the mall, or getting the flu from all those fellow shoppers.

But the nice thing about shopping online is that by following some basic guidelines you can be reasonably sure you'll have a safe experience.

Secure your PC: The first thing you need to do is be sure your computer is secure. Trend Micro's education director David Perry, says that "bad guys these days are operating by planting a keylogger on your system that listens in, surreptitiously waiting for you to use your credit card or your bank password so that they can steal your money." So, even if you're dealing with a legitimate merchant, you're at risk if your computer is infected. Your best protection from these attacks is to keep your operating system and browsers updated and use a good and up-to-date security program. If you're getting or giving a Netbook or other PC for the holidays, make sure that security software is installed right away. Most security companies offer a free-trial version that will tide you over for a month or so, but be sure to subscribe so you get ongoing protection.

Click with care: You're going to be getting a lot of offers via e-mail this holiday season. While they might be legitimate, there is the possibility of some offers coming from criminals trying to trick you into giving your password to a rogue site or visiting a site that can put malicious software on your computer. Your best protection is to not click on any links--even if the message looks legitimate--but to type in the merchant's URL manually.

Know the merchant: : If you're not familiar with the merchant, do a little research like typing its name (and perhaps the word "scam") into a search engine to see if there are any reports of scams. Look for user reviews on sites like Eopinions.com. Look for seller ratings if you locate the merchant through a shopping search engine like Google Shopping . Google doesn't certify the integrity of the sites that come up in its searches, but if you see lots of seller ratings that are mostly positive, that's a pretty good sign. You're generally pretty safe with sellers that are affiliated with shopping aggregators like Amazon.com, Yahoo Shopping, Retrevo or BizRate. Microsoft's new Bing search engine offers a cash-back program with affiliated merchants.

1)Visit well known toy sites: Sites like Toys R US or KBToys, EToys, or Amazon.com are very popular choices for online shopping. Don't forget the friendly neighborhood Walmart and Target online stores where you are more likely to get better deals.
2)Compare prices: Search for the same toy on various different sites to find where you can get the lowest price. You'd be amazed as to how the same toy can sell for such a big price difference. Some of the smaller toy sellers also keep a lower profit margin, so their prices are lower. Walmart and Kmart are also great sites to find bargain deals.
3)Validate site: Once you have found a website with lowest price in the toy you want to purchase, a good idea would be to call the telephone number listed on the site to find out whether they have the item in stock at that time.
4)Multiple Shipping Discount: Some sites offer a shipping discount in case you purchase multiple items. Once again, you can call the contact number and find out from the customer service of that website if they offer any such discount.
