The advantage of business numbers with a non-geographical code is that it gives the impression of a sizeable business with a presence across the UK. It encourages calls from customers not in the immediate vicinity of your main office and can help grow the business in a wider region as well as locally.

There are several different types of non-geographical business numbers with different prefixes but they can be divided into two broad categories. The difference lies in who pays for what. Sometimes it’s beneficial to have a business line that customers can call for free from any BT landline. In that case, your company will pay a premium rate for the number. Other times, you will want to charge customers to access the phone service. In that way you can actually make money from it directly.

The best known non-geographical business phone lines are 0800 numbers. These are the freephone numbers often used as sales and technical support lines, for example. If you go to the Contact tab on our website, you’ll find two of them.

On the other hand, there are 0844 numbers and a host of others. Here the customer is charged per second, and some of that revenue will go to your company. You can use these to provide premium support services or out of hours technical advice to customers, for example.
