The Difference Between Intranet and Internet-

1. The Internet is quite literally open to everyone with an internet connection, an Intranet usually resides on a LAN or local area network, and as such is totally separate from the Internet.
2. Intranets operate in a secure area and their content can only be seen by people within the this LAN or secure area
3. The purpose of an Intranet is to store any information which can be shared amongst.
4. Security on the internet is primarily on the web server itself, as opposed to security on Intranets which can be both web server security or integrated into domain security
5. Corporate networks generally force you to use proxy servers to connect to the Internet, but not to the Intranet
6. Generally an Intranet will be faster than the Intranet, due to local servers and less users.

INTRANET
An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. The same concepts and technologies of the Internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other Internet protocols are commonly used as well, such as FTP. There is often an attempt to use Internet technologies to provide new interfaces with corporate legacy data and information systems.

Briefly, an intranet can be understood as a private version of the Internet, or as a version of the Internet confined to an organization.

The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a network of networks that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.

Internet is where you are reading this now, it provides access to the rest of the digital world i.e. World Wide Web. Intranet is a small version of this used by companys and is usualy local, i.e. only the people who work there have access to the information being shared on its server.

In the information age that we live in today, the speed at which information can travel inside a company would often indicate the productivity of that company. It is often necessary to create an environment where the flow of data is unimpeded and the intended recipient gets it instantaneously. Computers make this possible and there are multiple ways to implement such a network.
An Intranet is a computer network that is designed to work like the internet but in a much smaller scale and is restricted only to the employees of the company. It is possible to run FTP, HTTP, and mail servers in the intranet that is independent and inaccessible from the internet without proper authorization. This allows the employees to send progress reports to their manager even when they cannot meet in person. Workers could also work collaboratively on a certain project while keeping their paperwork properly synchronized. It is often necessary to have access to the internet from within your intranet, which is why intranets are placed behind a firewall. Some companies even deploy two firewalls and place some services inside the DMZ in order to raise their security further.
An intranet, although very helpful, wouldn’t be very effective if it is totally removed from the internet. The internet is the massive network of computers from all around the world. It allows people to virtually any point in the world at a very minimal cost. Services like Email and VoIP has allowed many people to keep in touch despite geographical locations and time zones.
