Know the full or “list” price. In order to determine if a site's price is a good deal, you need to know the regular price. Always check the fine print for the details of the deal. For example, some ads may list the suggested retail price as the starting price for the stated reduction, even though the store was selling the item at a lower price. Price comparison sites such as PriceGrabber.com, Shopping.com, and Shopzilla.com are good starting places.
Do your homework before buying. Before you shop, determine what makes and models are available for the items you want. Look for reviews or ratings for the product and manufacturer. A product isn't a bargain if it is poorly made.
Determine the total cost. The total cost when shopping online may include sales tax, shipping & handling, and other fees. High shipping and handling fees can wipe out any savings on the item itself. Some sites offer free shipping but it is usually for basic ground shipping that can take as long as a week or more. If you need the item quickly, make sure you check the cost of faster shipping. Many sites, display the last day to order for an item to arrive by Christmas.
Beware of “strings.” Look for the “strings” attached to promotions. Strings are meant to catch and reel you in. For example, “buy one, get one free” – do you really need two? Or “get 10% off a $50 purchase” – did you plan to spend $50? Or do you have to buy a specific product to get the discount? Some “free shipping” offers require a minimum purchase.
Check out the return and refund policies. How long do you have to return the item? Are there any restocking or open item fees? Can you get a refund it you return it or can you only get a replacement item or other merchandise?
