Post Manners and Customs - Italy
Hi

* It is common for both Italian men and women to greet each other warmly, often kissing each other on the cheek even if the person is of the same sex.

* Italians are generally very physically expressive people and say as much, if not, more with their body language than they do with their voices.

* Family units are generally very important and tight-knit.

* The importance and value of food and eating cannot be quantified or understated.

* Most of the country claims to be Roman Catholic, even if they are not practicing and when visiting places of religious significance it is important to be respectful and often wear church dress.

* Manners are extremely important and the Italians are generally very polite with their dealings with each other and particularly with elders and superiors.

* Smoking is banned inside all public buildings.

* Drinking to the point of with the intent of getting drunk is frowned upon while in contrast drinking in public places is perfectly acceptable.

* Purchasing counterfeit goods from illegal is highly illegal

* Italy is a very regionalized country and these regions (eg Tuscany, Umbria, Calabria, ) are very distinct. People from each specific region or often even city are very proud of where they are from and often suspicious of their fellow countrymen who are from elsewhere.

Thanks

Post Re: Manners and Customs - Italy
Hello
Italians certainly dress well whether they can afford it or not. They do so because it presents a good image to others. Likewise, they admire people who regularly present "la bella figura"!

What I really discovered is that Italians like to look fashionable, even if they are just going out for a stroll. Some Italians are so fashion conscious that they wear only designer labels.

Since ancient times, Italians have manufactured & traded rich fabrics. Today, some of the world's most famous fashion houses are based in Italy. The fashion & clothing trade is Italy's second largest industry after tourism. I'm sure that you have heard of such fashion giants as Giorgio Armani of Milan who is most famous for designing suits; Benetton makes sweaters & other knitwear; Valentino of Rome designs mostly women's dresses; elegant clothes in unusual fabrics by Miuccia Prada; Ferragamo & Gucci's shoes with the long-standing Italian tradition of excellence in leather work; other designers such as Biagiotti, Ungaro, Dolce e Gabbana, Ottavio & Rosita; Mariuccia Mandelli, Missoni, &, of course, the house of Versace.

Milan has established itself as one of the fashion capitals of the world. Twice each year, this city hosts its Collezione, or "Collections," fashion shows This is where fashion designers, photographers, journalist, & models from around the world attend these shows.

Hello friends

No Matter where you travel, it’s always best to understand a little of the language, manners and customs of your host country in order to be polite and respectful to the locals. A few of these hints and tips may help you out as you tour through Italy while it’s also helpful to know a little Italian.
Contiki’s tour managers live and work in Europe full time and are also on hand to help you out throughout your tour.

I must say it is an informative post.Mostly its happens that
people don't have an idea/or proper knowledge about the place they are going to.
so I think everybody should know the about rules and regulations, climate and
environment(natural and social). So that don't make any mistake and enjoy their holiday
without facing any problem or troubles.

Thanks

Hello friends

Greetings are enthusiastic yet rather formal. The customary handshake with direct eye contact and a smile proves sufficient between strangers.
Once a relationship is developed, air-kissing on both cheeks, starting with the left is often added, furthermore a pat on the back between men.
Italians are directed by first impressions, and so it is important that you demonstrate propriety and respect while greeting people, particularly when meeting them for the first time.
Many Italians use calling cards in social situations. These include the person's name, address, title or academic honors, and their telephone number.
If you live in Italy for a longer time it is a good idea to have calling cards made.

Thanks
