# Make sure your room is locked and bolted at night.
# Always leave valuables, airline tickets and passports in the hotel safety deposit box.
# Carry a photocopy of the id page of you passport. The police can demand to see it, but rarely do.
# If you take a taxi, be clear about where you want to go. (See Scams)
# In Bangkok taxis have meters, but in provincial areas you will need to bargain the price.
# When travelling by train or bus don't leave valuables in you baggage, and be cautious of strangers offering free food or drink. Thai's can be very hospitable, but it also has been known for food and drink to be drugged. When you awake your valuables have gone.
# If you hire a vehicle read the terms carefully, and make sure you get proper insurance cover, otherwise you may have to pay for any damage or repairs.
# Wear reasonable clothing if you ride a motorcycle. A minor spill when wearing shorts can ruin your holiday. The law requires you to wear a crash helmet.
# The law requires front seat passengers in cars to wear a seat belt.
# Driving standards in Thailand leave a lot to be desired so take extra care.
# If you hire a water scooter or jet ski wear a life jacket and keep away from areas where people are swimming.

Fire Precautions
Always know where the nearest Fire Exit is located. It is worth the time to pop out of your room, and check where the exit doors are.

Always know, and ask, if rooms are equipped with Smoke Detectors, and Sprinklers
Conduct a spot check on any fire exit door, to ensure it is not locked from the inside, or blocked by furniture/rubble. This is a common occurrence even in five star hotels. If you discover the fire exit door is obstructed in any way immediately contact the General Manager, or Duty Manager

In-Room Security
Never leave valuables lying around. Use the in-room safe.
When in your room double lock the door.

At the reception, do not announce your room number aloud.

Check that any balconies are high enough to ensure the safety of any children. Similarly windows should be firmly secured so that little fingers cannot open them.
In the unfamiliar territory of a hotel room, there may be many sharp corners, breakables or electrical points which could pose a danger to children. Do check the room thoroughly to prevent any accidents.

Poolside Safety
At the swimming pool, ensure the hotel has a life-guard on duty.
Do not drink from a glass at the pool or beach. Insist the Management change to plastic/non-splinter cups.

Hotel Public Areas
Sometimes thieves disguise themselves as hotel staff. If you feel at all suspicious, ask for ID.
Many scam artists ply their schemes at the entrance and in the lobby areas of hotels. They may claim to be tour operators or hotel staff. If, for example, you are approached in your hotel lobby by a person in a business suit, who says he is working for the hotel and must check some details in your passport -- do not hand it over! Instead go immediately to reception and report this incident. It is not uncommon for visitors to Thailand to lose their passports in this fashion.

In some hotels staffs do not issue an authentic receipt. You may be issued with an internal "captain order", or an internal document. If so complain to the Duty Manager.
