Post Advice For Walkers In The Mountains
If you are planning a walking holiday when you book your chalet holidays, there are some basic guidelines you should stick to which will ensure that you stay safe. Most of them are plain common sense, but you would be amazed at how many people leave their chalets and head for the high peaks without the right clothing and equipment.

Be aware that weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, and can even become dangerous at times. It is therefore worth telling other people in your party where you are going and around what time you think you’ll be back at your chalets. For this reason, it can also be goof practice to take a first aid kit with you on your journey, just in case the worst should happen before you return.

Planning your route is also highly recommended whenever you’re in an unfamiliar area, and it always pays to stick with other people whenever you go off exploring. Also, try to take note of when it usually begins to go dark so that you can arrive back at your chalets in good time.

Remember – it is better to take too much food and water than too little, so try to plan ahead as much as possible when it comes to packing these supplies.

If you adhere to these guidelines, you and your friends will have the best experience of walking in the high mountains, and when you return to your chalets, you’ll be ready for a good meal, followed by a few well earned drinks. This is one of the best things about chalet holidays, because you can do your own thing during the day, and return to your chalets whenever it suits you. If you like the idea of being looked after, why not consider catered chalets? Catered chalets give you independence, but someone is there to cook your meals for you, which is the best of both worlds.

Hi

* A map and compass are essential kit and should be easily accessible – not buried in the rucksack!
* A mobile phone and GPS are useful tools but don't rely on your mobile to get you out of trouble – in may areas of the mountains there is no signal coverage.
* Take a whistle and learn the signal for rescue. Six good long blasts. Stop for one minute. Repeat. Carry on the whistle blasts until someone reaches you and don't stop because you've heard a reply – rescuers may be using your blasts as a direction finder.
* A torch (plus spare batteries and bulbs) is a must. Use it for signalling in the same pattern as for whistle blasts.
* At least one reliable watch in the party.
* Cllimbers and mountain bikers should wear a helmet. In winter conditions, an ice-axe, crampons and survival bag are essential.
* Emergency survival kit comprising spare clothing and a bivvi bag.

Thanks
