According to me Yes, depression is a serious, but treatable, mental illness. It is a medical condition, not a personal weakness.

Yes it is, in fact it is often considered the "common cold" of mental illnesses because it is so widespread. However that doesn't mean that it is caused by weakness or anything.

In many cases depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, just as many other mental illnesses that were once considered to be signs of weakness. It is a real disease and illness that in many cases require some sort of treatment.

There is definently a difference in feeling blue,feeling down and being clinically depressed.

Clinical Depression is a mental illness because it seems to occur for no reason and lasts for weeks. Medication and talk therapy is usually the treatment.

But, we all have bad things happen that would make depression a perfectly normal reaction.

For example, when my mom died I was really depressed for months. I would cry all the time, I was sad, and felt as if I had lost all hope for the future. But, I suspect that is called "feelings" and is normal.

But, if you can't seem to get rid of it, and it is causing huge problems in your life then yes it can be a mental illness.
