Post THREE TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR DOG ON HOLIDAY
1 Private holiday accommodation is the perfect solution for taking a holiday with dogs. Look here for pet-friendly holiday destinations.

2 It’s easy to travel with pets. Under the Pet Travel Scheme, dogs can be given pet passports after being microchipped, vaccinated and blood-tested for rabies protection. They can then travel to Europe, North America and some other countries without having to undergo the usual six-month quarantine on return.

3 It is important your dog associates car journeys with positive things. To do this:

* Get your dog used to being in the car, without it going anywhere. Then go on a short journey e.g. 10 mins with a fun experience at the end e.g. a walk. Have someone else in the car to distract your dog. At the end of the return journey, give pooch lots of fuss.
* Build up the length of the journeys to 30 minutes. If your dog is sick, reduce the length of the journey so it ends before they are sick. Build the journeys up again.
* Make sure your dog has an empty stomach before getting in the car. Allow them to pee and poo before travelling.
* There are a number of homeopathic solutions for travel sickness – such as PetAlive EasyTravel.
* Looking out the window can bring on nausea in many dogs, so consider keeping your pet safe and secure in a covered portable crate.
* Be prepared in case pooch gets queasy in the car. Cover seats, bring towels and bags. Give the dog plenty of air.
* For long trips, give yourself and your pet a walk every two hours. Avoid dehydration and take a travel bowl to allow them to have a drink during the break.
